Kumar relishes ‘community’ role

By Press Gazette

Social care publication Community Care has added a new reporter to its team. Shirley Kumar, 30, will be responsible for reporting on various issues in the community, including domestic violence, fostering, adoption and homelessness.

She joins from Independent Retail News, where she was senior reporter after travelling abroad and doing community work for orphanages in Asia, Australia and the US.

After graduating in journalism at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, Kumar began her journalistic career at the Bucks Herald.

In 1999 she set up a telecom news feed, Asia Telecom Daily, with Bly Croft which supplied industry reports and daily news stories to telecom executives. During her two years there, she worked regularly with Asian companies, which inspired her to go travelling.

Returning to the UK in 2003, Kumar worked briefly for Independent Retail News but soon felt she wanted to do something “more community active”.

She said: “I am really pleased to be working here at Community Care. It is an excellent job and a fresh challenge.

“There are so many issues that need addressing and it will be fulfilling knowing that I am helping to make a change.”
