Judges need PR

By Press Gazette

A media professional is being sought to deal with the increasing scrutiny of the Scottish legal system.

The PR person is being recruited by the Scottish Court Service to help judges deal with the media.

This follows The Sunday Times Scotland winning a ground-breaking decision on press freedom in Scotland, which allowed the newspaper to publish a report which revealed a league table, rating the performances of judges. Legal insiders say the new post is vital because of the increasing pressure judges are coming under to explain controversial decisions.

A legal source told the Scottish Daily Mail: “It is felt there is no protection for judges. They often have members of the press turning up on their doorstep, asking them about controversial rulings. There has been increasing frustration among many judges that they have no one to act as their spokesman.”

The new post of SCS public information officer will involve answering questions on all aspects of the judicial system.
