Jim O’Donnell: senior sub-editor on The Herald, Glasgow

By Press Gazette

Jim O’Donnell, who was a journalist on The Herald for many years before setting up his own printing business in Glasgow, has died aged 52.

He joined The Herald as a trainee reporter on its group of local newspapers before moving to the senior paper as a sub-editor. Latterly, as assistant chief sub-editor in the features department, he was responsible for the presentation of the main feature pages.

A keen outdoors man, especially rock climbing, cycling and sailing, he died as he might have wished – cycling in the country with friends.

John Fowler wrote in The Herald: “Jim’s calm and dedicated professionalism proved invaluable in many a crisis – and not least in dealing with sometimes temperamental colleagues.”

He was quiet, modest, good natured and cheerful; and, to those who knew him, a paradigm of the virtuous man. He had suffered a previous heart attack, but was advised not to let it impair his activities, and he lived life to the full. He and his wife Jean were an inspirational couple.” O’Donnell is also survived by his son Roddy and daughter Katie.
