The bitter public row between Scotsman Publications and Newsquest’s Herald Group shows no sign of abating -and is now set to cross to the southern hemisphere
The latest twist has come with John McGurk, the editorial director of Scotsman Publications, sending an email to 16 senior staff at the Melbourne Age, attacking its incoming editor Andrew Jaspan – currently editor of The Sunday Herald.
The e-mail contained the text of an article, criticising comments Jaspan made on the BBC Newsnight Scotland programme on 18 August, which was published in The Scotsman on 20 August.
The article followed an acrimonious discussion between McGurk and Jaspan on the BBC news programme, following the decision by The Scotsman to produce a daily compact.
The article was published under the headline: “The lies, damned lies of Andrew Jaspan. The Scotsman answer back with the facts”.
The identity of the new editor of The Sunday Herald is expected to be announced shortly.
Speculation has centred on the Sunday Herald’s deputy Richard Walker, and Joan McAlpine, deputy editor of The Herald.
