IPC is planning to launch a photography title following the success of trial one-shots.
Better Digital Photography will be published monthly by staff on sister title What Digital Camera. It will target entry-level digital camera enthusiasts who have just bought their first camera and want to find out more about how to use it.
Nigel Atherton, editor of WDC, is editing both titles. He said there would be little overlap as BDP was more technique orientated and WDC had more news and equipment coverage. “Most digital cameras have a lot of features on them and a lot of people don’t know what they are or how to use them,” he said.
BDP will also have “easy to follow” guides and a free CD Rom with every issue, including imaging tutorials based on those featured in the magazine.
The concept was first tested as a oneshot at Christmas 2001, then again at Christmas 2002. Atherton said both issues were well received. “We had a lot of feedback. Even now I get letters saying, ‘where can I buy this magazine, I want to subscribe,’ we realised we were on to something,” he said.
He said it would be a “challenge” editing both monthlies and a schedule has been set so they go to press on different weeks. Cliff Smith, former reviews editor on Digital Photography Made Easy, has joined the launch as deputy editor and Atherton is in the process of recruiting a designer and production editor.
Atherton has worked on photography magazines since 1994, having previously been features editor on Amateur Photographer.
BDP is due out on 14 August with a special launch price of £2.99. It will sit alongside IPC’s leading weekly Amateur Photographer.
