Grimsby Telegraph deputy editor Nigel Lowther is leaving journalism to set up his own press, PR and media training company.
Lowther joined Northcliffe's Grimsby and Scunthorpe Newspapers as a trainee in 1988. Two years into the job, he transferred from the Grimsby news room to the sports department.
In 1994 Lowther became assistant news editor, where he learned his trade alongside news editor Steve Richards and a year later took the deputy editor's role. In 1998, when he became new media manager, Lowther pioneered the use of the web across the region.
In 2002, he returned to the newsroom as assistant to the editor until 2003 when he was made deputy editor.
His work on the Ian Huntley Soham murder story won the paper plaudits when it picked up Press Gazette's Team of the Year award in 2004.
Lowther said: "[Northcliffe] have looked after me well over the years and I've been extremely fortunate to have done the various jobs and met some fantastic people along the way. But the time is right to leave and this is a fantastic opportunity for me."
He leaves the Telegraph on 29 September.
