Date set for Pebble Mill move

By Press Gazette

The BBC has set 23 June as the date for the first batch of 600 staff in Birmingham to move from Pebble Mill to the Mailbox, following delays that held back the transfer from November last year.

The staggered move will involve journalists working on network programmes for all BBC television channels and Radio 2, 4 and Five Live as well as for Midlands output including regional news bulletin Midlands Today, regional current affairs magazine programme Inside Out, the Politics Show, and BBC WM.

They will be followed by the online and Asian Network teams. English Regions and its controller Andy Griffee will move before Pebble Mill closes its doors in late autumn 2004.

Staff at BBC WM have been training in the £45m broadcasting facility in preparation for the first transmissions from the digital studios which are expected in early July, “but are dependent on the new technologies and systems fully bedding in,” according to the BBC.

Midlands Today is expected to go on air on 25 October, after a four-month training programme for the news team on new equipment.

The transfer is part of the BBC’s policy of moving into public, multi-purpose city centre buildings across the country to enable easier access by the public.
