The UK’s two best journalist darts players – as decided by Press Gazette and Ladbrokes.com’s first annual journalists darts tournament two weeks ago – played the match of a lifetime when they teamed up with professionals Ray van Barneveld and Phil ‘The Power’Taylor.
The contest was the main event at the launch of the PDC World Darts Championship. The two pros were the finalists from last year’s championship – which was widely held to be one of the best darts contests ever.
The winner of Press Gazette’s tournament, Steve Davies from the Racing Post, teamed up with Barneveld, and runner-up James Weatherup, assistant news editor at the News of the World, played with Taylor.
The match, held at Langan’s Brasserie in London, turned out to be a rather more one-sided affair than last year’s hard-fought final, with Davies and Barneveld winning by two games to nil.
Both journalists will now get the chance to attend the finals of the PDC World Darts Championship later this month at Alexandra Palace, televised on Sky.
