Compulsory redundancies averted at Express Newspapers

By Dominic Ponsford

The National Union of Journalists has managed to avoid compulsory redundancies at the Express Newspapers titles after seven months of negotiations with management.

Management had initially sought to cut 70 staff at offices in London (pictured), Broughton and Glasgow.

The final tally will see 40 journalists accept voluntary redundancy.

Among those to go is group managing editor Ian Parrot who abruptly left the company in August after 25 years.

NUJ deputy general secretary Barry Fitzpatrick said: “I am very pleased with this outcome and I pay tribute to the perseverance and determination of our chapel officials without whom this could have ended so differently.

“We will be continuing talks about the employment status of casuals and the pay review.”

Meanwhile, the chances of avoiding the first ever round of compulsory redundancies at Guardian News and Media are looking slim.

Management has started a 90-day consultation process on possible compulsory redundancies after 30 out of a target of 100 editorial staff volunteered for redundancy.

GNM is seeking to cut its 650-strong editorial workforce to reduce £44m a year losses.
