Carlton Television’s Central News teams walked away with three prizes at this year’s Royal Television Society Midlands Awards at the weekend.
Central News South was named best regional programme for a special edition on the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the US, while Central News West won best news and current affairs programme. Its presenter, Joanne Malin, won best in-vision personality.
Meanwhile, BBC Inside Out reporter and producer Jacob Hickey won the newly created best new talent category for his work on the regional current affairs programme.
Nuclear Paradise, a BBC Birmingham programme for BBC Three that looked at the threat arising from the build-up of nuclear might by India and Pakistan, won best factual programme.
BBC Midlands Today presenter Kay Alexander and Central News’s Bob Warman – both celebrating 30 years in broadcasting this year – were given special awards for their achievement.
Dermot Murnaghan, newscaster and now presenter of BBC Breakfast, hosted the ceremony.
