Ulster Television and the British radio company Capital Radio are to apply jointly for a new radio licence in Dublin.
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has invited applications for two new Dublin licences, one for a multi-cultural service, the other for an alternative rock service. UTV and Capital Radio plan to introduce the alternative rock service Xfm into the capital. The BCI will be considering applications for the two new Dublin stations over the summer and hearings will be held in the autumn.
UTV chief executive John McCann said that UTV and Capital could ensure financial sustainability for their projected station in a highly competitive market.
