Broadcaster and Irish Times columnist Vincent Browne is to launch an Irishbased current affairs weekly in the autumn, called Village.
Browne, who will edit the magazine, is aiming at an initial circulation of 20,000 copies, with a print run of 30,000.
He plans to finance the publication, which will cost €50,000 a week to produce, through a combination of loans and his own cash.
This is the third major publishing venture for Browne, who founded Magill magazine in the late 1970s and relaunched it in 1997, selling it the following year to publisher Mike Hogan.
Browne was also associated with the Sunday Tribune relaunch in 1983 and was its editor until 1994.
Commenting on his new magazine, which will cover Irish and international affairs, he said: “It’s a significant undertaking. There’s an awful lot of work in it.” He hopes to have Village on the streets from 2 October, and available every Saturday. Suzanne Breen, the veteran former Irish Times journalist, will also work for the magazine.
