Building magazine’s award-winning editor Adrian Barrick is to become publisher of four of CMPi’s architecture and construction titles.
Barrick will take responsibility for Building, Building Design and the monthlies RIBA Journal and Construction Manager.
He replaces former publisher Tony Arnold, who is leaving the company to pursue other interests at the end of the month. Barrick has worked on Building since 1991.
Commenting on his new role, he quipped: “It’s going to be like the platespinning act of the circus.
“My journalism career appeared to be over after 17 years but this was a fantastic opportunity I could not afford to miss.
“It’s a very exciting time to be producing a magazine in this sector because it’s very vibrant.
“Architecture and construction is at the top of the Government’s agenda at the moment with its attempt to improve public sector services. It’s pretty hot in terms that it’s on television a lot, so there are plenty of opportunities I think that we can exploit.”
Barrick suggested the reason CMPi appointed someone with a content background as opposed to a sales background was due to the level of public focus and high-profile issues the title writes about.
Florence Nightingale, Charles Dickens and Prince Albert are all former editors of Building. The title was founded in 1843 as a 16-page newspaper, with no pictures, during a building boom, by architect Joseph Aloysius Hansom.
Building has only had 15 editors in its 161-year history, partly due to the fact that the third editor, George Godwin, remained in the chair for 39 years.
CMPi is currently in the process of looking for a successor.
