The Evening Advertiser in Swindon has started 150 days of coverage to mark its 150th anniversary, writes Dominic Ponsford.
A special edition of the “Adver” on 6 February was mainly devoted to changes in the town over the past 150 years, with features, vox pops and an interview with one of the paper’s oldest readers.
On Monday the Advertiser published a 16-page colour supplement detailing the history of the paper and the town, revealing how the paper is put together and recapping campaigns it has won. The Newsquest-owned title is to publish more monthly supplements as well as weekly features.
Swindon Liberal politician William Morris originally produced the paper single-handedly as a monthly title until 1856, when he expanded into bigger premises and went weekly.
Last year the newspaper raised money to build a memorial garden for Swindon railway workers who died from asbestos-related illnesses. It is currently spearheading the Swindon Cancer Appeal.
