Aberdeen Indy plans to build gap

By Press Gazette

Aberdeen Independent is increasing its distribution by 20 per cent in a bid to create a readership gap between itself and other papers in the city.

The weekly free, which has upped its print run from 75,000 to 90,000, will be distributed to homes and businesses as well as shopping outlets in the area. Its free rival, the Aberdeen Journals-owned Citizen, has a distribution of 76,760.

The Office of Fair Trading fined Aberdeen Journals, who also publish The Press and Journal and the Evening Express, £1m in 2002 for trying to put the Independent out of business by offering under-priced advertisements in the Citizen, which was known at the time as the Herald & Post.
