The Aberdeen Press & Journal and the Carlisle News & Star shared the top title of daily newspaper of the year at the 2009 Regional Press Awards, which were announced today.

Journalists working on 24 regional newspapers, from city dailies to local weeklies, walked away with awards at this afternoon’s ceremony in London, hosted by radio presenter and former tabloid newspaper reporter Nick Ferrari.

Another eight titles narrowly missed out on a prize but were highly commended for their work.

The Carlisle News & Star, owned by the family-run CN Group, was crowned daily newspaper of the year in the below 40,000 circulation category. The paper picked up an earlier award for the work of sports journalist Jon Colman.

In the 40,000-plus circulation category, The Aberdeen Press & Journal took the prize of daily newspaper of the year. Sunday Life in Belfast and the Ipswich Evening Star were both highly commended.

Two Greater London papers shared the accolade of weekly newspaper of the year, with a third, the Ham & High, highly commended.

The South London Press under the new ownership of Sir Ray Tindle won with the award for best weekly newspaper with a 20,000-plus circulation.

And the Archant-owned East London Advertiser was named best weekly with a circulation of less than 20,000. Earlier in the ceremony its work to save the Tower Hamlets local history library won campaign of the year.

The other titles to secure two awards were the Hull Daily Mail – crowned multimedia publisher of the year, with Ian Bond named designer of the year – and the Gloucestershire Echo, which won supplement of the year for its Weekend magazine and scoop of the year for “Sex film row rocks school”.

The Carlisle News & Star’s weekly sister title, the Cumberland News, also won two awards. Jon Colman, who picked up the sports journalist award for the News & Star, had already appeared on stage to collect the same award for the weekly.

Roger Lytollis won weekly newspaper feature writer of the year, and the News was also highly commended for the prize of weekly newspaper of the year (above 20,000 circulation).
