Despite denials and threats, the Mirror team revealed the then Liberal leader’s liaisons with rent-boy Norman Scott and the apparent bungled use of a hitman, who shot Scott’s dog.

Lino Ferrari’s son Nick (the LBC radio host) told Press Gazette: “By a bizarre twist, Scott was a surprise guest at my 16th birthday as Dad had to hide him somewhere! He was the star of the night!”
