Independent issues correction, not apology, over front page claim of Sun ‘apology’ to Corbyn

The Independent issued a correction today after it claimed on its front page that a Sun correction was an "apology".

Yesterday, The Independent's front page directed readers to page seven, saying: "Gotcha! 'Sun' told to put Corbyn apology on front page".

This was reporting the news that the Independent Press Standards Organisation had upheld an accuracy complaint against the newspaper for its "Court Jezter" claims.

The Sun published the adjudication on page two, with a page one reference (pictured, bottom left of front page).

However, The Independent today published the following correction in the bottom left-hand corner of page two:

Unlike The Sun, The Independent – along with its sister titles and The Guardian, Observer and Financial Times – is not regulated by the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

The Independent was the first publication to report on the Corbyn correction. When The Guardian followed this up, a Sun spokesman said: “The only publications that will write about this decision have chosen not to abide by the press regulator, which is an irony worth noting.”
