Herald ordered by IPSO to say sorry over story based on false information from court clerk

By Dominic Ponsford

The Herald in Glasgow has been told by press regulator IPSO to apologise to a man who featured in an inaccurate story about a libel case.

The story, headlined “Dentist wins £50,000 action after patient’s false claims”, was published on 24 February and was reportedly based on inaccurate information provided by a court clerk to a freelance journalist.

In fact the Dentist had dropped proceedings and paid costs to the claimant.

As soon as The Herald realised its mistake it published a correction on page two of its print edition.

Complainant Andrew McIntosh complained to IPSO because the correction did not include an apology.

IPSO ruled that the Herald must republish its correction including an apology.

It said: “On this occasion, where the error had been personal to the complainant and had the potential to be seriously damaging to him, an apology was required.”

A similar complaint against the The Courier in Dundee was rejected by IPSO, because the paper has already apologised to the man.
