Departure of Brian Stormont from Angus County Press is third Johnston Press group editor exit in a week

By William Turvill

Another group editor is leaving regional newspaper group Johnston Press – the third such departure to emerge in the space of a week.

Brian Stormont, senior editor of the Angus County Press, has announced he is leaving the company after 25 years at the end of the month.

Stormont has direct editorial responsibility for the Arbroath Herald, Guide & Gazette and Montrose Review. He is the group editor of 14 newspapers overall.

The announcement of his departure comes after the exits of Jon Rohes, editor of daily The Gazette in Blackpool and two weekly sister titles, and Susan Windram, who has editorial responsibility for 11 weeklies in the Northumberland and Scottish Borders area.

Stormont told Press Gazette he is leaving voluntarily and said he will decide on his next career move after “taking a wee bit of time out”.

Asked about his motivation for leaving, the 42-year-old said that “25 years is a long time”.

Stormont started on the Arbroath Herald Guide and Gazette in 1989 as an apprentice at the age of 16.

It is not yet known who will be replacing Stormont.
