Former Telegraph foreign correspondent Richard Beeston dies aged 88

By Press Gazette

Richard Beeston, for 26 years a foreign correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, has died aged 88.

In its obituary the paper notes two of his biggest scoops. In 1964 he travelled for three days to an unmapped village in the Yemen to report on the aftermath of a gas attack by the Egyptian air force. And in 1977 he bumped into Soviet spy Kim Philby at the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and filed an exclusive interview.

Beeston’s son, also Richard, died aged 50 in 2013 after serving as an acclaimed foreign editor of The Times.
