Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

News broadcaster ITN recruiting eight school-leavers to digital apprenticeship scheme

By Press Gazette

ITN is looking for eight school-leavers to join the news broadcaster via a new 18-month paid apprenticeship programme.

It is actively seeking recruits from ethnically and socially diverse backgrounds for the scheme.

Full announcement from ITN:

ITN launched a new paid apprenticeship scheme today with its first recruits to begin in the New Year.

The ITN Academy Digital Media Apprenticeship scheme will see eight apprentices experience every aspect of working at ITN during an 18-month programme.

Apprentices will participate in all aspects of ITN operations from studios to journalism and editing in the field before going on to choose an area of specialism. This will be across ITV News, Channel 4 News, 5 News, ITN Productions, and our technology function.

ITN is targeting entry-level workers aged 18 and over, not university graduates, and it is likely that ITN will be their first experience of a professional environment. Apprentices will receive formal training one day per week at Ravensbourne College, in partnership with the not-for-profit organisation Creative Process, covering both the technical aspects of media as well as workplace behaviour and expectations.

ITN is actively seeking candidates from socially and ethnically diverse backgrounds as part of a wider ambition to ensure that we attract the skills, talent and voices to reflect modern British society.

ITN chief executive John Hardie said: “We are very proud to launch this scheme. This is a brilliant opportunity for those starting out in their careers to learn through experience, with ongoing guidance and support, in a passionate, hard-working, team environment. This is also our chance to perhaps find the next rising stars of ITN.”

The scheme is now open for applications.

Notes to editors:

ITN Digital Media Apprenticeship Scheme:

The first intake of eight apprentices will start in early in 2015. On completion they will be awarded an Advanced Apprenticeship in Digital Media.

The apprentices will work across many aspects of journalism, TV and multi-platform content creation.  They will spend the first six months of the scheme getting exposure to all aspects of ITN operations from studios to journalism to editing in the field. This will be across ITV News, Channel 4 News, 5 News, ITN Productions, and our technology function.

At the end of this six month exposure period, they will specialise in one of the following four areas: Studios, Technical Newsgathering, IT and Communications, or Journalism. This stage will be eight months, again across many of ITN's services.

The final stage of the scheme will be a role and department specialisation which best suits the specific potential and preferences of each individual apprentice, as evidenced during the earlier stages of the scheme.

Activities the apprentices will experience and work on include:

• Studio operations

• Camera operations and field editing

• Satellite trucks and master control room operations

• Planning and programme editing

• Online and digital content management

• Graphics creation and editing

• Newsdesk and logistics planning

• Newsgathering and reporting

• Long form content creation and research

• IT Projects and communications

Applicants must be aged 18 years old or over as from January 2015.
