Unnamed journalist and health care worker to appear in court over new illegal payment allegations

By Press Gazette

A health care worker from Liverpool has been charged by police investigating alleged corrupt payments to public officials.

Trust worker Alan Hagan, of Melling Mount, Kirkby, is to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 10 July as part of Scotland Yard's Operation Elveden.

An unnamed journalist has been summonsed alongside Hagan, 47.

The charge states that, between 18 January 2008 and 29 August 2010, the pair conspired together to commit misconduct in a public office.

Another man, a 29-year-old health care trust worker of Liverpool who had also been arrested, was told that he will face no further action due to insufficient evidence.

Gregor McGill, a senior lawyer at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "May I remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against them will now be commenced and of their right to a fair trial.

"It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."

Operation Elveden is being run alongside two other inquiries – Operation Weeting, which looked at alleged phone-hacking, and Operation Tuleta, examining claims of computer hacking and other privacy breaches.
