News UK donates £1,000 to local community group following cathedral carol service

By Darren Boyle

News UK donated £1,000 to a local community project next to its new central London offices following a carol service at Southwark Cathedral.

The company is moving to a building dubbed the 'Baby Shard' at London Bridge Quarter next summer. In advance of the move News UK has been developing links to local groups, including the All Hallows community project who received the donation.

The project aims to bring back to life the site of a church flattened by German bombers during World War II.

More than 200 members of staff including the editors of the Sun, Times and Sunday Times attended the service.

All three newspapers as well as staff from Dow Jones and Harper Collins will move to the new building when it is completed in the summer.

News UK chief executive officer Mike Darcey said: “We are a responsible company, rooted in the community in which we serve, and we look forward to building new links in Southwark.

News UK said 2,200 of its staff have already volunteered through a community investment programme, planting 50,000 trees in east London.

Also staff have given up 807 hours to work with local children, running reading clubs as well as photography competitions.
