The editorial team behind a new computer magazine are busily working on the first edition having secured £90,000 investment on the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform.
Linux Voice is being launched by the former editorial team of Linux Format – owned by Future publishing – and will hit the streets in February.
Editorial director of Linux Voice, Andrew Gregory said before leaving Future, Linux Format had an ABC circulation figure of 21,784.
He said Linux Format was only one of three Future print magazines to increase sales during 2012.
Gregory said the new venture would be truly independent and would help support the Linux community.
As part of that commitment, Gregory said 50 percent of the title’s profits will be given back to Linux users.
All of the content developed by Linux Voice will be relicensed under a Creative Commons Licence after nine months allowing it to be used as a learning resource.
Also, Gregory said the new title will not have to worry about short-term board-driven outcomes.
He said: “It's long been a dream of mine to launch an independent product, and we simply wouldn't have been able to do if it without IndieGogo. We're launching with seven months' operating capital up front, with no loans and without giving away any of our equity to investors.
“We're pledged to give a portion of our profits back to the community that we serve, and we're going to give away all of our old content under a free license nine months after it was first published. It's hard to see an investor or a bank manager agreeing to that, but crowdfunding means that you don't need to get anyone's permission. You can just do it.”
