Man convicted after breaking into Guardian offices to take Class A drugs

By William Turvill

A man has been convicted after breaking into The Guardian’s north London offices to take drugs, according to a local newspaper.

The Camden New Journal reports that journalists believed Clayton Earlington, 49, of North Road in Islington, was carrying out “hostile reconnaissance” over editorial coverage.

Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court was told that the man tailgated staff through security barriers and twice approached editor Alan Rusbridger’s office before taking Class A drugs in a toilet.

According to the Tribune, Earlington said he had been into the building before to use the toilets and was “desperate” to find somewhere close to King’s Cross where he had bought the drugs.

A Guardian News and Media spokesperson said: "We are aware of this isolated intruder incident and alerted the appropriate authorities at the time. Our professional security staff have tightened their procedures since this took place."
