BBC News claims traffic record of 19.4m browsers on day of royal birth

By Press Gazette

The arrival of the royal baby brought record traffic to the BBC News website on Monday.

According to the BBC's Editors blog some 19.4m 'unique browsers' accessed BBC News online on Monday. This compares with a previous record claimed by the BBC of 18.2m during the English riots of 9 August, 2011.

This compares with average daily global traffic for the UK's second biggest news website, Mail Online, of 8.2m unique browsers a day in June, according to ABC.

According to internal estimates quoted in The Guardian, Mail Online had 10.3m unique browsers on Monday.

According to the BBC, 9.2m mobile devices visited BBC News Online on Monday, accounting for just under half the visitors total.

Visits to the BBC News website peaked at 8pm and 9pm on Monday after news of the birth of the baby was announced.
