Alan Rusbridger: Guardian website now has as many US as UK readers

By William Turvill

Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger has revealed that Guardian.co.uk now has as many readers in the United States as in the UK.

Speaking at the Paid Content Live conference in New York he estimated that the paper has 40m readers worldwide – a third in the UK, a third in the US and a final third in the rest of the world.

He claimed the website’s traffic grew by 25 per cent last year overall and by 37 per cent in the US.

According to Paid Content, Rusbridger said it was unlikely that guardian.co.uk would follow the likes of The Times and Telegraph by going behind a paywall but said the paper is “open-minded” to the concept.

The site reports him as saying: “I think it’s great that people are trying.

“It would be even greater if people would share all the data so we could tell whether they’re working or not… it would be a big statement, in the UK to go and charge for what the BBC is giving away for free.”
