Start of the season predictions are one of the most exciting parts of a sports pundit’s job. Seldom does anyone remember your claim that Manchester United’s defensive ‘frailties’would set them back in the title race (The Guardian’s ‘analyst’David Pleat) or that it would be a ‘miracle’if Everton reached a European spot this year (News of the World’s Jeremy Butler).
So, looking back at the sage wisdom of Fleet Street’s back-page brigade, I note Brian Viner of The Independent’s bold statement last August: “If none of the big four reach the 2008 cup final I will lead a triumphant conga round Soho Square, naked. You can hold me to that.”
With the weather turning nice again we suggest there is no better time than now – following Portsmouth’s 1-0 victory over Cardiff City last weekend.
