Axegrinder hears that Daily Mail hacks believe Associated Newspapers' recent cooperation deal with India's India Today group could see dangerman Martin Clarke sent overseas.
Bear-like Clarke, who was entrusted with the Evening Standard's Standard Lite publication, has also been put in charge of the Mail's arts pages.
Some say that his demanding management style and low-brow tastes have enraged several colleagues, not least books editor Jane Mays and showbiz supremo Baz Bamigboye.
The other day, Clarke further cemented his reputation when he rang underling Heather MacGlone on her beach holiday and remonstrated with her.
But salvation may be at hand. Rumour is that Clarke may be despatched to the sub-continent to help Associated's new Indian associates acquire that air of refinement and subtlety which is so distinctive of the Mail's Derry Street HQ.
