Kim Phuc ‒ the “Napalm girl” who features in one of the most famous war photos of all time ‒ has since become a well-known figure in her own right and a Unesco goodwill ambassador.
But what of Nick Ut, the photographer who took the 1973 picture in Vietnam?
The answer was supplied by double Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer Horst Faas, speaking in London last week at the launch of a new book about the AP.
Faas revealed that his friend Ut ‒ still working for the AP ‒ was one of around 50 photographers waiting outside the LA sheriff ‘s department for heiress Paris Hilton to emerge. And Ut was the only one to get the shot of Hilton crying, which was published across the world.
Faas said: “I think he was about as happy to get that photograph of Paris Hilton as he was of Kim Phuc almost 35 years earlier.”
