If the first rule of journalism is to get the facts right, you can’t fault the Manchester Evening News.
But that respected organ could have benefited from a little compassion in its report of an amateur cricketer who collapsed and died this week mid-match.
“Billy Hughesâ€, writes a reporter, “had opened the batting for Robinsons CC in the first game of the season at Blackley when he slumped to the floor.â€
The report then says in the third par, “He had just hit two sixes and was unbeaten on 74 when he collapsed.â€
Which I’m sure is of great solace to his grieving wife Susan and two children.
