Grimsby Telegraph wins High Court battle to name sex offender

By admin

The Grimsby Telegraph has won a High Court battle to name a convicted sex offender, the paper reported.

Gary Allen issued proceedings to obtain an injunction preventing the Grimsby Telegraph publishing details of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order which had previous been made against him.

Allen claimed it breached his human rights to publish his name in relation to the order that stops him from approaching prostitutes, entering any red light area, entering a massage parlour or carrying certain sexually-explicit material, the paper reported.

Last year a district judge imposed an order postponing publication of his name and photo until a higher court could decide on his application for anonymity in relation to the SOPO

At a High Court hearing in Leeds on Friday, Justice Coulson rejected Allen’s application.

Michelle Hurst, deputy editor of the Grimsby Telegraph, has detailed the various processes her paper had to go through after being named in the original injunction.
