Greek journalist shot dead at his door

By admin

Sokratis Giolias became the first journalist to be killed in Greece for 20 years yesterday when he was gunned down by three unknown attackers.

The 37-year old investigative reporter was killed outside his home in the Athens suburb of Ilioupoli.

“Somebody wanted to silence a very good investigative reporter who had stepped on a lot of toes with his stories,” Panos Sobolos, president of the Athens journalists’ union told Reuters.

The FT reported that Giolias, news editor at Thema 89.9, a private Athens radio station, and of Proto Thema, a weekly tabloid newspaper, had been investigating local terrorist groups.

A police official was reported saying in the FT that the attack, in which Giolias was shot several times at point black range on his doorstep, appeared to have been carried out by a local terror group.
