Exhibition chronicles the days when cover girls needed to be domestic goddesses

The Ladies’ Mercury, launched in 1693, was apparently the first British women’s magazine. A new exhibition at The Women’s Library in London called Between the Covers, opening in November, provides a fascinating chronicle of how women’s magazine covers have developed since then.

The FT Magazine has provided a preview of magazine covers mainly drawn from the 20th century – from the days when your cover girl needed to be carrying armfuls of freshly harvested wheat, or a tray of perfectly presented cupcakes.
