Ofcom due to rule on pay TV as Freesat launches

By paulmcnally

BSkyB has criticised Ofcom’s approach in its investigation into the pay TV market. According to the Sunday Telegraph, the satellite giant has commissioned its own study, carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers, which has found that the UK market is competitive and not over-priced.

Ofcom’s investigation followed complaints from rivals Virgin Media, BT and Sentanta, who argued that consumers were losing out as a result of Sky’s dominance.

The Sunday Times, meanwhile, has an interview with the new Virgin Media, Neil Berkett.

In other news, the long-awaiting launch of a free-to-air satellite TV service in the UK takes place on Tuesday.

Freesat is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV. All of the broadcasters’ existing Freeview channels will be available on the new platform.
