Authors protest against Tesco ‘freedom of speech curbs’

By paulmcnally

A group of authors has signed a letter to the Times condemning supermarket giant Tesco’s “unsettling” attempts to silence critics in the courts.

The authors have thrown their weight behind a campaign by freedom of expression group PEN, after Tesco Lotus began a £1.6m libel claim against a Thai freelance journalist.

“As writers we greatly value the tradition of free speech in Britain,” the letter said. “We would like to think that a leading international business such as Tesco would be conerned with exporting these values along with its groceries.”
