BBC Ten O’Clock News to make viewer think, not smile or cry

By colinc

BBC’s head of newsroom, Peter Horrocks, has said BBC’s Ten O’Clock News will make the viewer “think” while ITV’s News at Ten tries to make them smile or cry.

On the head to head battle with ITV’s News at Ten which relaunches tonight, Horrocks said that the potential differences between the two news programmes could be seen in ITN editor Deborah Turness’ comment that the News at Ten’s ‘And finally’ slot should make ‘people go to bed with a smile on their face or a tear in their eye’.

By comparsion, BBC news is “all made to make you think”, said Horrocks.

Horrocks, writing on the BBC editors’ blog, also said that the return of News at Ten suggests news can survive in a commercial broadcasting schedule.
