A former police officer from the Met’s specialist operations command was today arrested by officers investigating corruption allegation at the News of the World.
The officer, who retired several years ago, was arrested at his home In Surrey at 6.30am by officers from Operation Elveden, the Met investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police and public officials.
The 57-year-old man is currently being questioned at a south west London police station and his home address is being searched.
The Met said: ‘Today’s arrest is the result of information provided to police by News Corporation‘s Management Standards Committee.
‘It relates to suspected payments to a former police officer and is not about seeking journalists to reveal confidential sources in relation to information that has been obtained legitimately.”
Operation Elveden is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and is being run in conjunction with Operation Weeting, the Met inquiry into phone-hacking.
He is the 27th person to be arrested by officers from Operation Elveden.
