The Culture Media and Sport Select Committee report into News International and Phone-hacking has subject the UK’s leading national newspaper publisher to excoriating criticism.
The MPs have concluded that Rupert Murdoch is not a fit person to run News Corp, that he and his son James were guilty of wilful blindness, that several senior figures at News International have misled Parliament and that the company has perpetrated a “cover-up” which treated MPs with contempt.
The House of Commons could yet take action against individuals for contempt of Parliament.
In an earlier report, in 2010, the same Committee accused News International of collective amnesia when it came to phone-hacking. This time, MPs went much further in what will be seen by some as revenge for earlier attempts by News International to mislead them.
