Mail Online overtakes NYT’s daily visitor traffic

By Andrew Pugh

The Daily Mail todayt claimed that Mail Online has overtaken the New York Times' daily traffic – affirming its position as the world's biggest newspaper website – a day after scooping website of the year at the Press Awards.

A Daily Mail article this morning reported the latest figures from web metrics company Comscore showed Mail Online recorded an average of 6,265,000 unique visitors a day in February compared with the NYT's 6,239,000.

In December the website overtook the NYT's monthly traffic for the first time after recording 45.3 million visitors compared with the NYT's 44.8 million, again according to Comscore.

According to the latest figures Mail Online remained ahead on that metric with 47.3m unique visitors.

This week the NYT announced that a year after it began charging for full access to its website it was cutting the number of articles available for free from 20 per month to 10.

Judges at Tuesday's Press Awards praised Mail Online for the 'large amount of original content that makes it essential reading in the newsrooms of competitors".

Accepting the award, editor Martin Clarke said: 'I like to think what we do on Mail Online encapsulates the best of Fleet Street."

He added: 'This is an amazing tribute both to the effort and professionalism of everyone in the online team and also to their print colleagues, whose work underpins everything we do.

"I am proud to have been able to accept the award on their behalf and would particularly thank the digital staff who have done such an outstanding job to introduce the Mail to an entirely new audience both here and abroad."
