C4 News’ Lindsey Hilsum wins Charles Wheeler Award

By Press Gazette

Channel 4 News International editor Lindsey Hilsum was last night presented with the Charles Wheeler Award for broadcast journalism by the British Journalism Review.

Hilsum follows previous winners Jeremy Bowen and Jeremy Paxman to pick up the award which commemorates one of the BBC’s greatest ever reporters.

She said: “Charles Wheeler was my role model and hero. I have always aspired to report in his tradition, and that’s why I’m overwhelmed and honoured to get this award.

“Charles once told me how much he liked our foreign reporting on Channel 4 News, so I also think it’s a recognition for our efforts on C4N to report foreign news in a way that’s serious but not solemn, as he did.”

Hilsum started her working life as an aid worker for Oxfam in Central America and Unicef in Africa. She has been with Channel 4 News since 1996.

Hilsum was in Rwanda at the start of the genocide there in 1994, was in Belgrade in 1999 when NATO bombed Serbia and in Baghdad during the 2003 US-led invasion.

Most recently she has reported from Egypt during the uprisings and from eastern Libya during the revolt against Colonel Gaddafi.
