News agency WENN has signed a new deal to sell on to the media photos posted by celebrities on Twitter.
The new licensing deal is with Twitpic, which is the largest image-sharing service on Twitter. According to WENN, Twitpic is used by hundreds of celebrities to post candid pictures online.
Under the Twitpic terms and conditions, users retain copyright but give Twitpic permission to further exploit the photos for commercial gain.
WENN chief executive Lloyd Beiny said: ‘In what was a hotly contested tender, we are extremely pleased to be selected as the exclusive photo agency partner of Twitpic.
‘There has been much unauthorised use of Twitpic images which we shall be addressing without delay. The belief by some that any photo posted on Twitter is available at no cost is completely wrong but now as result of this new arrangement, anyone wishing to publish celebrity photos posted on Twitter via TwitPic will be able to do so legitimately via WENN.”
In January this year WENN signed a similar deal with Plixi – another Twitter photo-sharing service.
