Publication last week of Audit Bureau of Circulations figures for regional daily and weekly newspapers made for grim reading.
Just three of the 86 regional daily newspapers in the UK put on circulation year on year in the last six months of 2010.
Add the fact that more than ninety per cent of paid-for weekly local newspapers recorded a year-on-year fall in circulation in the same period and the regional media looks increasingly troubled.
Web figures provided more grounds for optimism. Selected web traffic figures for the major regional newspaper groups showed, on the whole, sustained growth.
