The Press Association is planning to cut seven reporters as part of a restructuring of the news agency’s regional reporting network.
The agency entered a period of consultation last month with its regional staff over plans to implement a new structure outside of London – it also plans to cut two subeditor positions.
A spokeswoman for PA said: “We are proud of our regional network which currently has over 100 multi-skilled journalists working in the nations, regions and Ireland.
“Unfortunately, the Press Association, like other media organisations, has been affected by the economic downturn.
“We have also entered consultation with subeditors in our Belfast and Westminster offices. It is proposed that the duties of these two positions would be covered by our centralised production unit.”
Press Association is separately in consultation with staff in its news and sport production departments over a proposal to cut 50 journalism jobs as a result of Teletext’s plan to drop its news sections.
Most of Teletext’s editorial content was provided by PA. It emerged in September that owners Daily Mail and General Trust would cease using the news agency for its Teletext services once it drops news sections in January.
The majority of staff affected by the Teletext move are based at PA’s centre in Howden, Yorkshire.
