NCTJ Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2009

Promising young journalists and photographers were today rewarded for their hard work and commitment when they received NCTJ Awards for Excellence in Journalism from BBC director of news, Helen Boaden.

Boaden presented awards to 13 promising reporters and photographers at the Society of Editors’ conference in Stansted, Essex, today.

Kim Fletcher, NCTJ chairman, said: “Journalism is undergoing a period of dramatic change where skills needed to work in print, broadcast and online news delivery are converging.

“Students now need to know how to work across all platforms to stand out from the crowd and the need for excellence is greater than ever.

“The winners of these awards have demonstrated this value of excellence which has always been at the heart of the NCTJ.”

The category winners were:

News Journalism

Student: Tim Fletcher, City of Wolverhampton College

Trainee: Arron Hendy, Dorset Echo

Sports Journalism

Student: George Scott, News Associates, London

Trainee: David Jordan, Grimsby Telegraph

Top Scoop

Student: Juliet Conway, Brighton Journalist Works (winner)

Student: Jessica Shankleman, Cardiff University (highly commended)

Features of the year

Student: Harriet Webster, NoSWeat Journalism Training

Trainee: Emily Koch, Bristol Evening Post

Images of the year

Student: Bethany Clarke, The Sheffield College, Norton

Trainee: Leah McLaren, Derby Telegraph

A judging panel of six senior journalists working across the magazine, national and regional newspaper industry selected the award winners.

Three awards for the best performance in examinations leading to the NCTJ Preliminary Certificate in Newspaper Journalism, NCE for Reporters and NCE for Photographers were also presented.

NCTJ Photographer of the Year

Hannah Kinver, South Wales Evening Post

NCTJ Reporter of the Year

Victoria Carr, Wetherby News
