The shortlists have been announced for the 2009 Press Gazette Regional Press Awards.
Some 40 judges were involved in a judging process which was overseen by former Northern Echo editor, and director of Press Association Training, Peter Sands.
Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford said: “It’s been an incredibly tough year for everyone working in the regional press. The work of all these awards finalists is a tribute to the gutsy termination and great story-telling which more than anything else will ensure that regional journalism has a great future.
“As has been said before – the work of the regional press is the groundstone of Britain’s journalism industry. Without local newspaper journalists knocking on doors, attending meetings and pouring over council minutes – so many stories, which go on to get picked up by national media outlets, would never see the light of day.
“Well done to all this year’s finalists.”
The awards lunch will be held in London on 8 May hosted by LBC breakfast host Nick Ferrari.
