Jeremy Warner has left The Independent after 23 years to become assistant editor of The Daily Telegraph.
Warner has been business and city editor at The Independent for the past 14 years, and joined the paper when it launched in 1986.
As well as his assistant editor role, Warner will also write regular columns for The Telegraph.
Daily Telegraph editor Will Lewis, said: “Jeremy is one of Britain’s leading financial journalists with an outstanding reputation for incisive, well-informed, and agenda setting commentary on all aspects of business, the economy and finance.
“I have read his column every day for years and am absolutely delighted he is joining our Telegraph team.”
Warner said: “I’m looking forward immensely to joining a team with an already outstanding reputation for excellence in business and financial coverage. The Telegraph’s development of a world class digital presence is an added bonus.
“It is a wrench for me to be leaving The Independent, a newspaper where I have worked happily in various guises since its creation in 1986, but I feel the time is right to take up new challenges and I know I leave the paper in very capable hands with an excellent future ahead of it.”
Independent News and Media announced in November it was cutting 90 jobs from its national newspaper division, with 60 in editorial, to save £10m. Last month, 20 staff were given compulsory redundancy notices.
According to ABC, its average daily circulation in February was 205,964 – down 18.41 per cent year on year.
