Reuters trains African business journalists

By Owen Amos

A training programme for ‘ambitious African business journalists’has been launched by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and The Investment Climate Facility for Africa.

The programme will focus on improving business, financial and investment journalism across Africa, in order to increase trust in reporting.

ICF’s chief executive officer, Omari Issa, said: ‘This is an important project as it will not only increase domestic and foreign confidence in regional reporting but will also increase awareness of the importance of the investment climates for the future of Africa.

‘We truly believe that financial and business reporting should be ‘by Africa for Africa’.”

Media organisations are invited to recommend reporters for the introductory programme, delivered in French, English and Portuguese.

The first of these sessions will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on 23-27 March, followed by a second session in Dakar, Senegal on 20-24 April.

In total, six separate introductory sessions will run across Africa, delivered by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, created in 1982 to support journalists in developing countries.

From those sessions, 20 journalists who show the greatest potential will join one of two advanced one-week training programmes in either London, Paris or Lisbon.

Applications forms are downloadable from www.icfafrica.org and www.reuterslink.org, and the deadline is February 20.

ICF will fund training programme fees and accommodation, but media organisations will cover journalists’ flights and allowances.
