The National Union of Journalists won a five-year fight for recognition at the Racing Post when it signed a house agreement with the paper’s new owners, FL Partners.
The British Association of Journalists, run by former NUJ general secretary Steve Turner who set up the BAJ as a rival union in 1992, has ended its position as the paper’s official union.
NUJ father of chapel Robin Gibson said: ‘I am really pleased and I hope it means the start to a good year of cooperation with our new owners. So far things have gone fairly well and we should have a good relationship.’
The union’s national newspapers organiser, Barry Fitzpatrick, said: ‘Over the past five years the title’s previous owners deliberately denied a majority of Racing Post journalists a voice at work. We’re delighted that NUJ members have finally achieved justice.”
Earlier this month, the NUJ and BAJ claimed victory when the paper’s 130 staff were given tax-free bonuses – totalling £700,000 – because previous owner Trinity Mirror did not consult with staff on the paper’s sale, according to employment legislation.
